EQUILIBRIUM is an independent, international, non-governmental organisation dedicated to improving treatment and understanding of the causes and effects of bipolar disorder ('manic-depression'). Our launch has been hosted by Oxford University in the UK. Bipolar disorder probably affect up to 254 million worldwide, 12 million in the US and 2.4 million people in the UK...
The CEO of Equilibrium is the consultant psychiatrist Dr Alan D Ogilvie.
I work for the Bipolar Foundation - I run the Bipolar Testimony Project and do a number of other jobs, including writing and editing. This is what it says about me on the Team page:
Team member who has suffered from severe, protracted bipolar I disorder and was previously a doctoral student in Clinical Medicine at the University of Oxford. Katy Sara is now well and after writing up her DPhil she decided she wanted to spend more time writing, mainly about bipolar disorder and psychiatry, and her first book Dark Clouds Gather (autobiographical) is being published and is available from all good online bookstores and can be ordered from any ordinary bookstore. Katy Sara also spends her time working in medical research, and helping fellow survivors of bipolar disorder through charitable organisations whilst trying to maintain her own good mental health. For example, she is a moderator on the Stephen Fry forum where she focuses her attention on The Secret Life of The Manic Depressive section of the forum. She is an advocate for all survivors of this illness and believes that an "expert patient" system could be highly beneficial. She has a particular interest in improving diagnosis and treatment for mixed bipolar disorder states as this terrible form of bipolar disorder caused her significant, almost lethal problems and was not easily recognised.
